How to Choose a Jute Bag Manufacturer in India: A Buyer's Checklist

India makes most of the world’s jute bags, so buyers have many suppliers to compare. Prices and promises can look alike on a website. This checklist shows what to ask, what to check and what to avoid before you place an order.
Ask what the factory does itself
A bag passes through several steps: fabric, dyeing, stitching, printing and checking. Ask which steps happen in the factory and which are given to outside partners. There is nothing wrong with partners, but you should know who is responsible for quality at each step.
Order a sample first
Never place a bulk order without a sample. Check the size, the stitching, the handles and the print. Ask how long a sample takes and whether it is free.
Check the certificates
Ask for the certificates themselves, not a logo. Check that the supplier’s name is on them, that they are current and that they cover the product you want. Our guide to certifications explains what each one checks.
Get the minimum order and lead time in writing
Ask for the minimum order per design and in total, and for the production time after sample approval. Compare these before you compare prices.
Ask how the bags are checked
Ask how finished bags are inspected, and whether you can arrange a third party inspection before the goods ship. A supplier that welcomes inspection is usually confident in its work.
Check the branding methods
Ask which printing methods the supplier offers and whether they are done in the factory. Jute has a coarse weave, so simple, bold artwork prints best. Ask for a mock-up before the sample.
Compare shipping terms
Prices on FOB, CIF, DAP and DDP terms cannot be compared directly. Ask each supplier to quote the same term. Our page on exporting jute and cotton bags from India explains each term.
Notice how they communicate
How fast and how clearly a supplier answers before you order shows how they will behave after you order. If you can, arrange a video call or a factory visit.
Red flags

- Only stock photos and no real photos of the factory
- No sample, or a sample that takes much longer than promised
- Vague answers about certificates and no copies
- A price far below every other quote
- No clear minimum order or lead time
